Disability VAT relief, where applicable, can help save you money on this sometimes rather large expense.

We stock an extensive range of power pack batteries for many chairs. The batteries in the chair are an essential part of the rolling gear but often get overlooked once they are no longer functional. While it's true that these kinds of batteries need no maintenance, they still need to be looked after.

Quite often, we hear of batteries coming to an early end simply due to poor treatment. You can extend the life of your batteries by following just a few rules. Always fully charge your new battery when it arrives and before its first use, and fully charge it again after the next 5 uses.

In general, users try to keep the battery manageable. It is better to charge it after every use to keep it topped up, rather than letting it run down between uses, as this will only damage your new mobility wheelchair batteries. It is best to use an intelligent charger with your mobility batteries. This charger will keep your battery at its best and can be left on charge without any detrimental damage. The same cannot be said of standard chargers, where the battery must be taken off charge when the cycle has completed, which can overcharge the battery.

If the Mobility scooter or Wheelchair is not used for an extended period, you should charge the battery periodically. As with all batteries, they lose a percentage of their charge in storage each month, which is worse in cold, wet conditions.

Valve-regulated lead acid batteries, VRLA with absorbed glass mat technology, or AGM.

Of course, the batteries are not the only part of your mobility scooter or wheelchair that may require attention. If they have pneumatic tyres, you should check the pressure and keep them topped up. It is vital to keep your chair clean and wash off any dirt as soon as possible, keeping it as dry as possible. If you need to store it outside, you should invest in a cover and keep it secure. We recommend servicing it to keep it in good working order, especially if used on the road at higher speeds.
