This sealed lead battery type is used in many kinds of apparatus, often used in mobility scooters as a safe non-spillable power source. normally in the lighter weight versions that can be broken down into smaller pieces for transport in a car boot for example. In these circumstances there will be two of them that combine to create the 24v of power required to turn the motors.
There uses do not stop there they are used as a reliable, safe, non-hazardous power source in many devices, high end computer battery backup systems, uninterruptable power supplies, ride on toy cars even to power an electric fence to keep pests out
The standard 12v 12ah battery is often used to replace a much older 10ah (not to be confused with a different sized slimmer and taller model) and indeed even some batteries up to 14ah, the important thing is the physical size which you will find below as we also do the afore mentioned ampere ratings in different carcass. Still 12v but different size and shape, the size of this battery is as below

Mostly this size battery will have a F2 or T2 terminal, this is a Faston type, flat spade that is 6.35mm wide. We can also supply batteries in this size with a screw down terminal, often seen in some transportable vehicles imported from the far east.
You can directly replace the 12ah with a 14ah of same physical size. The AH or amp hour is the energy storage of the cells, the more you have the longer it will last between charges. If you took this example of a mobility scooter, it would mean that it can travel further on a single charge. Also you do not need to change the charger, your existing one will suit.
These are also often also connected in series or parallel to increase the voltage, or Ampere, or both, they are the work horse of battery storage, tough exterior, quite forgiving, the AGM ones can be mounted on the side. But if you want to keep them then charge after every use, if not being used then recharge every six weeks, look after them and they in turn will look after your wallet.
Valve regulated lead acid, known as VRLA, they are also absorbed glass mat technology or AGM, safe to use and require no maintenance, although you should keep them charged, deep cycle batteries should be kept above 50% charge to get the best from them and as in common with all rechargeable batteries they will lose a little energy over time so if not being used charge every two months and never store in a discharged state.
