These back up battery power packs often get overlooked but they are integral to your alarm system functioning as is should. These batteries can be used to power the control board when for example power has been cut either purely because of a general power cut (you do not need that alarm going off a two am in the morning because of the electric company) or deliberately by someone with bad intentions.

Quite often, this type of battery is charged by the mains, and would not know it's no longer functioning until the mains power has been removed. We are sure you have heard loads of alarms going off if you have been somewhere that has been subject to a power cut. In these cases, the power should then come from the battery. You of course never know when there might be a power cut, so change your battery every couple of years to ensure yours is in good order.

You can check you old battery is in good order quite easily with a cheap multimeter that most people will have. A 12v rechargeable sealed lead battery when fully charged will be in excess of 13.5v and a 6v one will be over 6.75v. But to be honest if they have been in there a couple of years you should think about changing them as the price is very low and if you do not you really might wish you had done at some time in the future.
