Most batteries these, regardless of what application they are in are normally either 12v or 6v. If you have something that runs on a higher voltage system such as 24v, 36v, 48v or even 60v, you will most likely have a set of 6v or 12v batteries connected in series to create this. This is a generalised rule and certainly not true in all cases.

Let's take a car, motorbike or HGV battery for example. Energy will slowly disperse from any rechargeable battery, and if it's not being used it can do an awful amount of damage. There are many pieces of equipment, like alarms, that will speed this along. If they are left in a discharged state, the plates will not be able to attract the electrons required to store the energy. Therefore the capacity will decrease, and you will be in ever-decreasing circles until the eventual demise of the cells.

A lot of vehicles will compound this issue with immobilisers and such draining the energy and making the overall process even quicker. At the very least you should charge lead acid batteries every four weeks to keep them topped up, that is with the assumption that there is no other drainage, which in the case of a car, motorbike or HGV is very likely. Once a car battery has been fully discharged, it's highly likely it will never be the same again.
