Its impossible to generalise but often Harleys are used sparingly throughout the summer months and rarely during the winter, this is not the best environment for a battery, also many have alarms or immobilisers that too create a added drain, some are connected through trickle chargers on the bike but this is also probably not the best way forward.
In our experience the best way to treat your motorcycle battery is to use it very regularly, if that is not the case then remove from the bike, charge it and put it off the garage floor in a warm and dry place, recharging it every 3 months to ensure it is in perfect condition when you next use it, everything else is just a compromise that you have to weigh up the convenience against the early purchase of a new battery.
By far the best thing to do when you require a new battery is to look at the code on the battery already in your bike, in particular with have found variations of battery in the same model of Harley Davidson, even terminals reversed making it worthwhile to spend 5 minutes checking first.
