Laptop batteries are normally made up of a number of cells to make up the voltage and the amp hour rating, i.e. the energy storage of the battery. Because there is more than one cell, and they are used to power delicate equipment inside your laptop, the cells need to have a balanced charge. This just means that the cells all have a similar charge voltage-wise. Where this all goes wrong is when one of the cells is too low then your computer may not recognise the whole battery pack.

It is very important to fully charge your new battery before the first use and after the first couple of uses. Lithium Ion and Lithium Polymer batteries are pretty good, in that they do not leak much energy when not being used. But they do leak some, so keep the battery fully charged, do not try to run it all the way down and then charge it as they do not suffer from the memory effect and you will only make things worse for the battery. If you are not using the notebook and battery for an extended period make sure you fully charge the battery before you put it away and if it’s a long time perhaps an occasional charge.

Whatever your portable computer is, a laptop, a notebook, a netbook, Ultrabook or Tablet you will need to replace the battery. Hopefully before the computer as they are a lot more expensive.
