You want to run up the UPS without any load to start until the batteries are fully charged. They will come to you almost fully charged anyway so it should not take that long and it will help with the reset for new batteries.
These are valve regulated lead acid batteries, more commonly known as VRLA with AGM technology. this means that the acid is suspended in a glass mat between the plates so they will not leak and they are non-hazardous so safe for this purpose in a data centre.
