Adalberto Garelli started his career with Fiat, trying to develop the perfect two-stroke engine. However, he resigned from his position there in 1911 because he and Fiat did not share the same vision for the future. From here, he continued working for other manufacturers while, in the background, working on his 350cc split-single-cylinder engine. Then, in 1918, the royal Italian army organised a competition to design a motorcycle, which he won.

This 350cc motorcycle set the long-distance record from Milan to Naples and rocketed Garelli to fame, allowing him to found his own company in 1919. His engine had a significant impact on racing, and many successful Italian racers used his bikes in their racing careers. He also produced motorcycles for the Royal Italian Army up until the end of World War II. When that ended, he focused on producing mopeds and bikes for civilian customers in the European market.

Garelli's motorcycle racing career is where the bikes really came through, though, as they dominated the 125-class in the world Grand Prix motorcycle racing between 1982 and 1987, winning every year.
