Having being launched in 1975 only 4 years later there was half a million of them, it was infarct a rebadged version of the Audi-50, only petrol models were available for 895cc to the 1,272cc all straight 4-cyclinder, in 1981 the second generation version was launched and this ran to 1994, probably the most startling change was the rear window being almost vertical compared to the previous ones that had a marked rake or slope, making them more like the modern versions of hatchback, its place in the market was super-mini but was very large in comparison to others such as the Metro or Fiesta, it had many rivals of the same price bracket and capabilities but stood out due its favourable build and reliability, in this model there were a lot more engines to choose from including a diesel but it was not made available in the UK market.
The mark 3 (often seen as the mark-4 because of the major facelift in the previous model) ran between 1994-2002 had a new chassis, another marked feature was the availability of a 5-door version, the engine range was increased yet again with some 1.6 petrol and the introduction in the UK of a 1.9 diesel, the late 90's showered the model with a plethora of awards in the Super-mini class, the fourth and fifth models took the car to 2017 with a whole host of adaptations and improvements in styling as well as engine power plants and the mark six launched in 2017-2018 will great improvements on cabin space and storage.
The original Volkswagen Santana was only produced for a few years from the early to mid 80's as a 4-door saloon or some 5-door estate cars.
If you use your car daily then you are already looking after the battery to a certain extent as long as you have a properly working charging circuit, it's when they only get used occasionally that the problems start, if thats the case then run them up every week for 20 minutes to put the charge back into the battery or put them on a charger, also if you use it every day you are perfectly placed to know if the battery was not as good as it once was, as soon as you suspect this then its time to change as you can be assure that on the chilly autumn or winter morning when you desperately need the car it will fail, it's the law of the universe and far better to change on a warm afternoon than in the snow.
