An AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery is a type of sealed lead-acid battery. The name "AGM" refers to the separator material used in the battery: a glass mat saturated with electrolyte solution. This design allows the battery to be sealed and maintenance-free, as there is no need to add water or check the electrolyte level.
AGM batteries have several advantages over traditional flooded lead-acid batteries. They resist vibration and shock, making them well-suited for mobility scooters or off-grid applications. They also have a lower self-discharge rate, which means they retain their charge longer when not in use. They are also more resistant to sulfation, a process that can shorten the life of a lead-acid battery.
Maintaining your battery is fairly simple, although you will see many different pieces of advice online that may contradict each other. The number one rule is to never leave your battery discharged; you must charge it after every use, especially if it is installed in a mobility scooter or similar device. Second, charge before first use, and know it may take up to ten cycles for the battery to reach full capacity. Lastly, if a period of six weeks or longer will pass without use, then a top-up charge will help keep the cells fresh.
