An AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery is a type of sealed lead-acid battery. The name "AGM" refers to the specific type of separator material used in the battery, which is a glass mat that is saturated with an electrolyte solution. This design allows for the battery to be sealed and maintenance-free, as there is no need to add water or check the level of electrolyte solution.
AGM batteries have several advantages over traditional flooded lead-acid batteries. They are more resistant to vibration and shock, which makes them well-suited for use in mobility scooters or off-grid applications. They also have a lower self-discharge rate, which means they will retain their charge for longer periods of time when not in use. Additionally, they are more resistant to sulfation, a process that can shorten the life of a lead-acid battery.
Maintaining your battery is fairly simple although you will see many different pieces of advice online that may contradict each other. The number one rule is to never leave your battery in a discharged state, you must charge after every single use, especially if being installed into a mobility scooter or similar device. Secondly, charge before first use and know that it may take up to ten cycles for the battery to be able to reach its full capacity. Lastly, if a period of six weeks or longer will pass without use then a top up charge will help keep the cells fresh.
