They can be safely mounted on their side, which is often the case in large UPS systems and are hot swap capable without fear of spillage due to the absorbed glass mat technology or AGM. They need no maintenance after installation except to be kept charged; if fitting in a mains-fed device, that has already been taken care of for you. If not, and it's in a portable device, try not to allow the battery to discharge too far. In an ideal world, if you can maintain at least 20% of the charge in it at all times, the battery will last much longer than deep cycling down too far, so charge after every use and every eight weeks if not being used.
