This battery type is Ni-MH or Nickel Metal Hydride, 1.2v cells that combine to produce the voltage and required capacity within the battery box, they are very similar to Ni-CD (cadmium), the main difference to the end user is more capacity within a given space, quite often the chargers are designed for both and no noticeable difference would be observed in use.
