You should fully charge your new compatible Bosch cordless power tool battery when it arrives and first use. As in common with all rechargeable batteries they will slowly lose the charge in them, this will need to be replaced, by charging. You will get the best from them if you use on a regular basis. If this does not happen and they spend a large proportion of life sitting used them a top up charge every eight weeks will be required. This will help maintain a longer life and no doubt save you money in the long run.
This battery will fit all of the tolls in the range. So if you have others and they get more use then rotate the use of the batteries. Well worth doing to prolong the usability of them all rather than allow one to sit in a discharged state.
The battery pack has inside it many small cells. These are connected together in such away to provide the voltage and energy storage that your cordless power tool requires to function. Over time these smaller cells will naturally dissipate energy and the voltage will drop on them. If not arrested by charging then eventually these cells will all end up have different voltages and go out of balance. In turn they can get to the stage that the charger will not recognise them and not able to instigate a charge. This means the early death of the battery pack, the cells may well have a lot of life in them, but because they have been allowed to sit in a discharged state it will not work. So if you want a long life from your battery pack, keep it charged, else you will be revisiting us next spring for a new one. Not something we mind, but your pocket might have a different view.
You will note this is a 3ah version of the battery, much more energy storage than the ones often supplied from new with power tools, this enables much more use on a single charge, twice as much as the 1.5ah, that's a lot more work than can be achieved.
