The expected life span of batteries in this application is between 3-5 years in normal conditions. This will be reduced with abnormal loads; heat is another overlooked factor. Uninterruptible power supplies should have good ventilation in a temperature-controlled communications room. Underneath someone's desk with a pile of papers is probably not the best site for such equipment.
