Valve regulated lead acid batteries, or as sometimes known as VRLA, they will not leak even if mounted on there side, they are valve regulated for safety, require no maintenance, are deemed approved for travel by air although you should check with the airline if they have any particular restrictions.
Looking after you new batteries is easy you only need to follow a few simple rules, they will save you money in the long run. This kind of battery does not like to be discharged below 50%, doing so will shorten the overall life of the battery, in real life terms this is not practical, but bear it in mind, try to charge after every use and know if you run it down to far you are shortening the life a little bit every time, also it is important not to store away discharged, if not being used charge every month or so
