These are deep cycle valve regulated lead-acid cells, the acid is held in suspension within a glass mat so there is no liquid to leak, this technology is called AGM, the cells are not-hazardous and safe to be mounted on the side as is often the case where this is fitted.
They are popular in many devices, quite often inpatient and animal veterinarian hoists, where two of them are combined to make 24v, they are also seen quite a lot in larger weighing machines and commercial scales as well as many other portable devices or as a battery backup.
If they are fitted in a constant mains fed device then there is no need to be concerned about the charging regime as this is taken care of automatically, if they are going in a portable device then charge before using it for the first time, try to charge it as soon as you can after every use, it is far better to treat it this way than to allow it to discharge fully which will affect its performance as time goes on, if not being used then charge every five weeks to keep the cells activated
