When your order is delivered to you your new batteries will be almost fully charged, but regardless of this you should still complete a charge them before first use, however if it's a battery backup for something that's always connected to the mains like a monitor or maybe a alarm system then you do not need to charge it first as the system will do that for you, you do not need to leave it on for hours on end, it will probably not take very long at all depending on the charger, just until the charger has indicated that it has finished, you may well be impatient and use the equipment without charging but it's worth waiting until its fully charged and will help extend overall life expectancy
Unless you are a very extended user you will probably not even notice that it can take a number of charge and use in your equipment before a full capacity charge is achieved, this is all part of the conditioning process and quite normal, once you have used your portable equipment then put the batteries back on charge, do not let them sit in a partially discharged state for any longer than absolutely necessary, do not try to fully discharge the batteries, it will not rejuvenate them, it will reduce the lifespan and cost you money in the long run, there may well be extended periods where the batteries are not being actively used, if so ensure they are charged fully beforehand and then recharged every 4-6 weeks but do not leave on the charger for more than 24-hours at a time
