Charge your new battery when it arrives and first use, it should not take long as the batteries will have a good element of charge in them. If the batteries are indeed being used in a device that is not constantly being monitored and replenished with power then you should recharge after use and before putting away. If they are not being used then also recharge every four weeks to keep the cells active for later use.
The cells are mainly constructed from lead, so ensure that when they reach the end of there life span that they are sent to a recycle centre so they can be recycled and used to converted into another useful product. In doing so they are a very environmentally friendly source of energy storage. Under no circumstances should they be allowed to go to landfill. This would be a waste of precious resources.
